Can Chickens Eat Fish?

Safe to feedYes — cooked, plain

Chickens can eat cooked fish — a strong protein and omega-3 treat; keep it plain and occasional.

The why

Fish protein and omega-3s are excellent for birds (fishmeal has been a poultry feed staple for a century). Cooked, unseasoned fish — flesh and soft bits — is safe and eagerly taken.

How to feed it

Flake plain cooked fish over feed, or let the flock clean a cooked carcass and remove it after.

Worth knowing

Heavy regular fish feeding can flavor eggs; keep it occasional. No breaded/fried leftovers as a habit, and raw fish only if impeccably fresh — cooked is simpler.

The 90/10 rule: whatever the treat, a laying flock's diet should stay about 90% balanced feed. Treats — even the healthy ones — are the garnish, not the meal. Wondering what your flock really costs to feed? Try our free egg cost calculator.
