Can Chickens Eat Spinach?

In moderationYes — small amounts

Chickens can eat spinach, but keep it occasional: its oxalic acid can interfere with calcium absorption in laying hens.

The why

Spinach is genuinely nutritious — iron, vitamins A and K — but it's also high in oxalic acid, which binds calcium. For layers, whose eggshells depend on calcium, a daily spinach habit is a bad trade.

How to feed it

A small handful for the flock once or twice a week, fresh or wilted from the fridge drawer.

Worth knowing

Moderation is the whole rule. If you feed lots of greens, rotate: lettuce and kale daily-ish, spinach and chard occasionally.

The 90/10 rule: whatever the treat, a laying flock's diet should stay about 90% balanced feed. Treats — even the healthy ones — are the garnish, not the meal. Wondering what your flock really costs to feed? Try our free egg cost calculator.
