How much coop space does a chicken need?

Short answer

1.5–4 sq ft each

Build to 3 square feet per bird inside the coop and 8–10 in the run. You'll see 1.5 sq ft recommended too — that's not wrong, it's an older assumption about birds that range daily. If yours are shut in through hard winters, 3 is the honest number, and nobody ever regretted a bigger coop.

What that means in a real building

  1. A family of four wants 8–12 laying hens.
  2. At 3 sq ft per bird indoors, that's 24–36 sq ft — a 4×8 coop covers ten birds comfortably.
  3. At 10 sq ft per bird in the run, the same flock wants 80–120 sq ft — roughly 10×10.
  4. Add 6 inches of roost per bird (Penn State) — ten hens need 5 linear feet of perch.

The recommendations differ by a factor of three

This is one of the widest splits in backyard poultry guidance, and it's worth understanding before you build something you can't easily change.

The split is generational, not random. Older confinement-oriented publications assume a tight, well-ventilated house where birds are outside most daylight hours. Newer welfare-oriented guidance assumes birds that spend real time indoors — northern winters, wet springs, hawk pressure. eXtension is unusually candid about the underlying problem: "there is very little peer-reviewed research looking at the space allowances for backyard poultry." Nobody is hiding a better number; it doesn't exist yet.

Three square feet per bird indoors if they're confined for stretches, two if they range daily most of the year. Ventilation matters more than floor area either way — crowding problems usually show up as ammonia and damp bedding before they show up as pecking.

What changes your number

  • Bird size. Penn State is the only extension source that breaks this out explicitly: bantams 1 sq ft indoor and 4 in the run, large chickens 2 and 10. Roughly a 2–2.5× range across body sizes.
  • Climate. The more months your birds are shut in, the closer you want to be to 4 sq ft. A Texas flock that's outside 340 days a year genuinely needs less than a Minnesota flock.
  • Run access. A permanently open pop door changes the math more than any square-footage rule. Coop space is sleeping and laying space when the run is always available.
  • Species. eXtension: ducks want 5 sq ft, turkeys 6 sq ft indoors and 20 in the run — meaningfully more than chickens.

Penn State also specifies 5 gallons of water per 100 birds daily; UF/IFAS puts it at roughly a gallon per 25 hens per day. Nest boxes want to be at least 2 feet off the ground and 4 feet from the roosts, or the hens will sleep in them and you'll be scraping boxes instead of collecting eggs.

Why oversizing is the cheap mistake

Coop square footage is the one input here you can't adjust after the fact without building again. Feed you buy weekly; flock size you change every spring. A coop you built at 1.5 sq ft per bird caps your flock permanently — and the cost difference between a 4×6 and a 4×8 is a couple of sheets of plywood, decided once.

What to do with the surplus

If you're sizing a coop, you're probably also working out how many birds to put in it — and that number depends on how many eggs your household actually eats.
