Due-Date Planning for Goats, Sheep, Cows, Pigs, and Rabbits

There is a particular kind of dread that comes from knowing a doe is due sometime soon and not knowing what soon means. You start checking her twice a day, then four times, then at two in the morning in the rain, because you cannot remember exactly when she was bred and you would rather lose sleep than lose kids.

A due date fixes most of that. Not because animals honor calendars — they do not — but because it turns an open-ended vigil into a defined window you can actually prepare for.

How long each species carries

The averages are well established and steadier than you might expect:

• Rabbit — about 31 days, normal range 28 to 33. A tight window, which is a mercy.
• Pig — about 114 days, or the old rule of three months, three weeks, and three days. Most litters land between 112 and 116.
• Sheep — about 147 days, most ewes lambing between 144 and 152.
• Goat — about 150 days, right at five months, with a range of roughly 145 to 155. Miniature breeds often kid a few days early.
• Cattle — about 283 days, a little over nine months, ranging roughly 279 to 292. Dairy breeds tend to run slightly short and some beef breeds slightly long.

Larger stock stretches further out: horses average around 340 days but vary enormously, alpacas about 345, llamas about 350, donkeys about 365.

A due date is the middle of a window

This is the part worth internalizing. A goat due date of March 12th does not mean March 12th. It means most likely somewhere in the week around March 12th, with the honest range running from about the 7th to the 17th.

Breed, litter size, age, and nutrition all move it. First fresheners often go a little differently than seasoned mothers. A doe carrying triplets frequently kids earlier than one carrying a single.

So the practical rule is to be ready from the early end of the normal range, not the average. If you set up on the due date itself, roughly half the time you are already late.

The two weeks that actually need planning

The due date matters mostly because of what it lets you schedule backward from it:

• Two to four weeks out — pre-kidding or pre-lambing vaccinations if that is part of your program, and any dietary adjustment for late gestation.
• One to two weeks out — clean and bed the kidding pen or farrowing space, and put your supplies where you can find them in the dark.
• Rabbits, day 28 — nest box in. Earlier and she will use it as a toilet; later and you risk a litter born on the wire.
• The last few days — the twice-daily checks that are actually worth doing, because now you know when to start them.

That sequence is the real payoff. The date itself is trivia; the schedule hanging off it is the useful part.

The one record that makes it possible

None of this works without a breeding date. That is the whole ballgame, and it is the record most commonly lost — noted on a feed-store receipt, or held in your head for the four minutes before something else happened.

Write down the date, the female, and the male. The pairing matters more than people expect: two seasons on, when you are deciding what to keep and what to sell, knowing which buck produced which kids is the difference between breeding on evidence and breeding on impression.
