Can Chickens Eat Banana Peels?

In moderationYes, but most won't bother

Banana peels aren't toxic to chickens, but they're tough and bitter — chop them small or compost them instead.

The why

The peel itself is safe and holds some nutrients, but it's fibrous enough that most chickens ignore a whole peel entirely. There's also a pesticide-residue concern on conventionally grown bananas, since the peel is where residues concentrate.

How to feed it

If you feed them, chop peels into small pieces or boil them briefly to soften. Organic peels are the better candidate.

Worth knowing

Wash first, chop small, and don't be offended when your flock votes them into the compost pile anyway.

The 90/10 rule: whatever the treat, a laying flock's diet should stay about 90% balanced feed. Treats — even the healthy ones — are the garnish, not the meal. Wondering what your flock really costs to feed? Try our free egg cost calculator.
