Can Chickens Eat Grapes?

In moderationYes — halved, and just a few

Chickens can eat grapes in small numbers — halve them to prevent choking and ration them like the sugar bombs they are.

The why

Grapes are safe for chickens (the mysterious kidney toxicity seen in dogs hasn't been shown in poultry), and flocks go berserk for them. But they're mostly sugar and water, and a greedy hen can choke trying to swallow one whole.

How to feed it

Cut grapes in half — or quarters for bantams — and scatter them so the whole flock gets a share instead of the fastest two birds.

Worth knowing

A few halved grapes per bird is plenty. Watch that dominant hens don't hoard; grapes cause more flock drama than any other treat.

The 90/10 rule: whatever the treat, a laying flock's diet should stay about 90% balanced feed. Treats — even the healthy ones — are the garnish, not the meal. Wondering what your flock really costs to feed? Try our free egg cost calculator.
