Can Chickens Eat Bananas?

Safe to feedYes — in moderation

Chickens can eat bananas — they're a soft, sugary favorite, best in small amounts a couple of times a week.

The why

Bananas are packed with potassium, B6, and quick energy, and their soft texture makes them easy for every bird in the pecking order to get a share. The downside is sugar: too much regularly can pack weight onto hens and dent egg production.

How to feed it

Peel and break into chunks, or mash overripe bananas into their morning feed. Freeze slices for a summer cool-down treat.

Worth knowing

A few chunks per bird, a couple of times a week. Overripe is fine; moldy is not.

The 90/10 rule: whatever the treat, a laying flock's diet should stay about 90% balanced feed. Treats — even the healthy ones — are the garnish, not the meal. Wondering what your flock really costs to feed? Try our free egg cost calculator.
