How big a garden do you need to feed a family?
Short answer
Nobody official publishes this
Roughly 540–925 square feet per person for a year's supply — but read the next section before you trust that number, including from us. No land-grant extension service publishes a square-footage figure for feeding a family, and every confident number you'll find online traces back to a blog quoting another blog.
So we derived it, and here's the work
- Start with University of Missouri G6201, which publishes feet of row per person for both fresh eating and processing — the processing column is a year's supply.
- Take twelve staple and storage crops: potatoes 50–100 ft, sweet corn 30–50, bush beans 20–30, dry onions 25–50, peas 25–30, beets 10–20, carrots 10–15, spinach 10–15, kale 10–15, winter squash ~15–25, tomatoes ~7.5–15, cabbage ~3–5.
- That totals roughly 215–370 row feet per person.
- Missouri's own hand-cultivated row spacings run 18–48 inches — call it 2.5 feet average including room to walk.
- 215–370 row ft × 2.5 ft ≈ 540–925 sq ft per person, or roughly 2,200–3,700 sq ft for a family of four.
What extension actually says about garden size
We searched the publications of more than twenty land-grant extension services for a square-feet-per-person figure. It isn't there. What they do publish is much more modest, and the qualifiers matter:
- Kansas State (MF315)
- "Even a 100-square-foot garden can produce a good portion of the vegetables for a family of four."
- NC State
- "One 4-foot by 8-foot raised bed may supply a good portion of the produce for one or two people." (32 sq ft)
- University of Maryland
- "A good starter garden size is 25 to 50 square feet."
Every one of those is for "a good portion of" the produce, or a starter garden. None is a year's supply, and that qualifier is exactly what gets dropped when these numbers get repeated. Meanwhile the figures circulating widely online — "200 sq ft per person," "4,000 sq ft feeds a family of four," "an acre per person" — appear nowhere in extension or USDA literature that we could find. They're blog numbers.
Use our derivation as a planning range and treat it as what it is: arithmetic on Missouri's row-feet data, not a published recommendation. Then start smaller than the number says. A well-kept 400 sq ft beats a weedy 2,000.
What changes your number
- Fresh eating vs. putting up. This is the single biggest variable, and it's why the online numbers vary so wildly. Missouri and Texas A&M both publish separate fresh and preserve columns — for onions the gap is 5 ft versus 30 ft per person. Sixfold. Decide which garden you're planning before you measure anything.
- What you actually eat. A year's supply of vegetables you don't like is not a year's supply. The staple crops that dominate the square footage — potatoes, corn, dry onions, winter squash — are also the ones people most often plant out of principle and then don't eat.
- Growing method. Intensive raised beds fit substantially more into the same footprint than Missouri's row spacings assume. WVU publishes a plants-per-square-foot table if you're planning beds rather than rows.
- Season length. A long season means succession planting, and the same bed produces two or three times. Our derivation assumes single plantings on most crops.
- Storage. Growing it is half the job. A year's supply implies somewhere to keep it — root cellar, freezer, or shelves.
A number we won't give you
We'd rather tell you a number doesn't exist than invent one. Four other figures in this guide series get the same treatment: how much egg production really drops in a hen's second year, how many eggs a Pekin duck lays, how many acres of pasture a goat needs, and the annual feed for a meat doe and her litters. In each case the internet is confident and the research literature is silent.
The honest constraint
Square footage isn't usually what limits a homestead garden — time in July is. The derivation above describes a garden that needs weeding, watering, and harvesting through the hottest weeks of the year, and then needs all of it processed and stored. Most people's first year overshoots on space and undershoots on the hours.
What to do with the surplus
A garden sized for a year's supply produces almost all of it in a six-week window. What you do in that window — freezing, drying, curing, cellaring — determines whether it was a year's supply or a compost pile.
