How many green bean plants per person?
Short answer
10–15 ft fresh, 20–30 ft to put up
Ten to fifteen feet of row per person for fresh eating, twenty to thirty if you're freezing or canning for winter. Bush beans come in all at once and want succession planting; pole beans keep producing from a much shorter row.
The arithmetic
- Kansas State: 12 lbs per 10 feet of bush beans, 15 lbs per 10 feet of pole beans.
- USDA-NRCS puts a year's supply at 8 lbs per person from about 8 row feet — a notably lighter assumption than Missouri's.
- A quart of frozen beans is roughly 1.5–2 lbs fresh.
- Twenty quarts for a family of four = 30–40 lbs = about 25–35 feet of bush beans at Kansas State's rate.
The multiplier that gets dropped
This crop carries the most commonly mis-copied figure in garden planning, and it's worth being precise about.

Virginia Tech publishes 10 plants per person — but their table is per planting, and for bush beans they assume four successive plantings across the season. The season total is 40 plants, not 10. Content that quotes "10 plants per person" from Virginia Tech without the multiplier is off by a factor of four, and that error is widespread. Bush beans produce heavily for about two weeks and then quit, which is precisely why succession planting is assumed.
Bush beans: sow a new short row every two to three weeks rather than one long row in May. Pole beans: one planting, picked continuously for two months, from roughly a third of the row length.
What changes your number
- Bush vs. pole. Bush beans are one concentrated harvest per sowing — better for freezing a batch at a time. Pole beans yield more per foot and keep going, but need a trellis and take longer to start.
- Succession. Missouri and Virginia Tech both assume multiple sowings for bush beans. One planting gives you a glut and then nothing.
- Picking frequency. Beans left on the plant to swell signal it to stop flowering. Picking every two or three days genuinely extends the harvest.
- Spacing. Bush: 3 inches in-row, rows 24–42 inches apart. Pole: hills 36 inches apart, or 4–12 inches in-row on a trellis.
- Days to maturity. 50–60 days for bush, 60–80 for pole — consistent across every source.

Kansas State and Virginia Tech differ by roughly threefold here, which is a bigger spread than most crops. Clemson's plan sits between them. The likely explanation is whether the figure is a single harvest or a season total across successive pickings — worth assuming the lower end for planning and being pleasantly surprised.
Space it needs
Thirty feet of bush beans per person, at 30-inch row spacing, is about 75 square feet. Pole beans deliver the same poundage from roughly a third of the ground — one of the best returns per square foot in the garden if you're short on space.
What to do with the surplus
Beans freeze well and quickly, and unlike most of the garden they don't need anything more than blanching and a bag. A two-week bush bean glut is very manageable if you've got freezer room ready before it starts.
